Miners Lake

Miners Lake in Ely, Minnesota is a former open-pit iron Orr mine that naturally filled with water when the historic Pioneer Mine pumps were shut off. Located right on the edge of downtown, it is a clear, deep body of water known for its sunken trees, submerged mining equipment, and excellent fishing opportunities.

Fishing

Miners Lake is a designated stream trout lake, actively managed and stocked by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Fishing piers are located both at the boat landing on the North side of the lake, as well as at the non-motorized landing located on the East end of the lake, just off the parking area.

Species: Rainbow, brown, and brook trout are regularly stocked. You can also fish for largemouth and smallmouth bass, northern pike, and panfish.
Regulations: Check current Minnesota DNR Fishing Regulations. Fishing hours are one hour before sunrise until 11 PM, daily, during trout season.

Access & Boating

Public Access: There is a dedicated public boat launch and access point on the northeast side of the lake, located just off Miners Lake Landing Road (behind the Grand Ely Lodge). There is also a non-motorized water access on the East end of the Lake, as well as ADA compliant Kayak dock
Crafts: The lake is perfect for kayaking, canoeing, and small non-motorized boats, and motorized boats.
